Define objectives and make the most of stand size

Before you can start brainstorming creative ideas for your exhibition stand, you should set out your objectives: Which products or services do you want to showcase? Which target audiences do you wish to reach? Do you want to generate leads, or is your main aim to strengthen your brand image? Clearly defining your objectives helps you make the best use of your stand space. Articles on exhibition stand design recommend dividing the stand area into functional zones – presentation areas, meeting zones, quiet areas – and visually separating them from one another. For smaller stands (e.g. 20 m²), this means utilising the height and vertical space through ceiling structures or backlit graphics, whilst large stands (100 m² and above) can be planned with spacious lounge areas, meeting rooms and interactive zones.

Storytelling and brand identity

A creative exhibition stand tells a story – your brand’s story. It’s not just about colours and logos, but about the overall experience: What values do you embody? How can visitors experience these values? Research into modern exhibition stand design shows that multisensory experiences and interactivity enhance the visitor experience. You should therefore make use of materials, lighting, sound and digital media that authentically represent your brand. For us at sectorplan Part of this involves translating our clients’ vision into a spatial concept.

Layout and visitor flow

Clear visitor guidance is essential to ensure that prospective visitors can find their way around the stand. According to industry experts, the stand should be designed to appear inviting whilst also arousing curiosity about specific areas. Pathways that intuitively guide visitors from the product display to the consultation area can be highlighted using floor coverings, colour changes or lighting. Transparent materials such as glass or fabric create a sense of visual openness and allow a glimpse into other areas of the stand. Signs and digital displays serve as signposts and convey key messages at a glance.

Examples of best practice from our projects

Smarter E Europe – Exhibition on bidirectional charging

In the Smarter E Europe 2025 We organised a special exhibition on the topic of bidirectional charging. An open-plan layout with orange and blue colour accents created a dynamic atmosphere and embodied the forward-looking theme of e-mobility. Interactive displays explained the technology, whilst real vehicles served as eye-catchers. As System construction we set the combined Aluvision/Lightwall system , which enabled us to integrate high-resolution LED screens.

Ziegler – Transport Logistic 2025

The exhibition stand of Ziegler S.A. made use of a spacious 99 m² floor plan to create an open, lounge-style atmosphere. An integrated café (‘Coffee-Ape’) with a barista served as a meeting place for customers and reflected the company’s motto, ‘Logistics with passion’. The modular stand design was based on Aluvision and allowed for great creative freedom. A suspended LED wall displayed impressive sequences from the world of logistics and created a striking visual impact from a distance. The colour scheme – dark blue, red and white – gave a professional and dynamic impression.

BayWa Global Produce - Fruit Logistica 2025

The concept for BayWa Global Produce combined natural materials with digital elements. Across 200 m², the brand identity was emphasised through textile wall coverings and real fruit. The challenge was to keep the fruit and vegetables fresh throughout the several days of the trade fair. This was achieved through systematic air circulation and the selection of hardy varieties. The Aluvision system resulted in a flexible, sustainable stand that can be adapted for use at other trade fairs as required.

General Kinematics – GIFA 2023

The two-storey stand for General Kinematics demonstrated how the Aluvision system can showcase even heavy industrial equipment. The striking colour red and a distinctive circular counter defined the look of the stand. Large machines from the field of vibration control technology were showcased across 360 m². Despite their weight, assembly and dismantling were carried out efficiently thanks to the modular double-deck system. Cleverly positioned meeting areas and a spacious upper level created space for in-depth discussions with customers.

Sustainable exhibition stand concepts: the Aluvision system

Sustainability has long since become more than just a trend; it has become a fundamental requirement in exhibition stand construction. The decision-makers within the target audience of sectorplan place great importance on the resource-efficient use of materials, efficient logistics and reusability. Technical articles recommend modular construction methods in which stand components can be reused multiple times without compromising design flexibility.

Aluvision: an innovative solution

The one we use Aluvision system offers precisely this flexibility. Aluminium profiles can be extended or reduced in size depending on the stand’s dimensions, walls can be clad with fabric graphics or wood, and technical elements such as LED video walls are seamlessly integrated. The modules are durable and minimise waste and transport volume. Studies on sustainable exhibition stands emphasise that modular systems reduce environmental impact and are more cost-effective in the long term. Furthermore, the Aluvision system uses standardised connections and tools, which reduces set-up time and labour costs.

Use of sustainable materials

As well as the basic design, the choice of materials plays an important role. Wood from sustainably managed forests, recycled plastic, bamboo or textiles made from recycled PET bottles all contribute to an overall eco-friendly image. Industry experts recommend replacing printed information materials with digital solutions such as QR codes or tablets, and opting for reusable products (e.g. water bottles, cotton bags) as giveaways. Energy efficiency is also a key consideration: LED lighting and the economical use of media technology minimise electricity consumption.

Media technology and interactive elements

LED video walls and digital highlights

LED screens are eye-catching and allow for flexible content display. They are ideal for product videos, live demonstrations or interactive presentations. According to user reports, a large-format, dynamic screen is captivating and gets the message across without the need for many words. In the project Ziegler – Transport Logistic 2025 We have integrated a 360-degree LED wall into the exhibition stand. This displays striking imagery from the logistics sector and brings the brand to life. A particular highlight was a ‘Coffee-Ape’ with a barista: here, visitors could grab a coffee whilst relaxing and finding out about the services on offer. The combination of digital presentation and face-to-face interaction creates a holistic experience.

Interactive technology – VR, AR and touchscreens

Trends in exhibition stand design highlight the importance of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and touchscreens. VR, for example, enables virtual tours of production facilities or allows visitors to immerse themselves in new products. AR enhances physical exhibits with digital information – visitors can access additional data via a tablet or smartphone. Touchscreens and interactive tables encourage dialogue; they serve as digital product catalogues, enable product configurators and collect contact details. The interactive presentation comes across as innovative, reduces waiting times and creates an emotional connection with visitors.

Social media and live events

As well as stand design, the digital extension plays a major role. Live streams of product presentations, social media walls or photo opportunities make your trade fair message visible online and increase its reach. Another interactive element is gamification: playful elements such as quizzes or competitions help generate leads and convey information in an entertaining way. Here, too, it is important that these activities align with the brand image and are consistent with the company’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Colour psychology and lighting design

Using colours effectively

The choice of colour has a major influence on how a trade fair stand is perceived. Specialist articles on colour psychology describe how blue conveys trust and reliability, red conveys attention and energy, and green conveys a connection to nature and tranquillity. Yellow is associated with optimism, whilst orange is associated with creativity and dynamism. Use colour combinations that match your corporate identity and appeal to people’s emotions. Example: For the exhibition stand of Lobster – Transport Logistic 2025 We chose fresh shades of green and natural decorations featuring hanging plants to combine sustainability and digitalisation. Translucent fabric graphics created a sense of lightness and enabled quick set-up. Interactive screens on every table gave visitors the opportunity to explore supply chain processes digitally.

Lighting as a means of creating atmosphere

Light is not only used for illumination, but also for creating the right atmosphere. Warm light creates a welcoming atmosphere, coloured light draws the eye, and spotlights highlight products. Sustainable LED technology saves energy and can be controlled flexibly. A good mix of general lighting, accent lighting and indirect lighting creates the right atmosphere. In our General Kinematics stand at GIFA 2023 We showcased a two-storey structure featuring heavy machinery. Clean lines and a bold red accent colour contrasted with the light-coloured wood in the reception area. The lighting highlighted both the machinery and the brand messages. The Aluvision system enabled quick assembly and dismantling despite the double-storey design.

Multisensory approach

Trade fair visitors do not rely solely on sight; smell, sound and touch also influence their perception. According to current trends, multi-sensory concepts create a more immersive experience. Examples include sound design (subtle background music), scent marketing (e.g. the smell of coffee or the scent of the forest for nature-themed exhibits) or materials to touch (wood, fabric, stainless steel). The aim is to make the brand tangible and create positive memories. At BayWa Global Produce - Fruit Logistica 2025 We combined textile elements with real fruit, which had to be kept fresh throughout the entire trade fair. The result was an authentic, natural stand that appealed to all the senses.
